AVC-I Compression Explained

AVC-Intra (an addition to Panasonic's already highly efficient DVCPRO HD compression scheme), reinforces the quality and stability of Intra frame recording. Developed to give greater flexibility in Broadcast HD production, the new intra frame compression format gives broadcasters and production companies a greater choice without necessarily compromising HD quality.
The new higher efficiency, open standard compression scheme is based on H.264, a new technology. This gives a huge increase in Pixels by Line at 100Mbps and the similar amount as DVCPRO HD at 50Mbps, effectively creating a new level of HD production while lowering production costs. This means approximately 2x higher efficiency than any HD compression scheme currently available. Switchable between high quality 100Mbps mode for high end production and a more cost effective 50Mbps mode for situations where HD quality is required but faster and at a lower cost.
Ideal for broadcasters it offers stable picture quality whichever subject and situation faced with no quality damage during frame by frame editing. The 100Mbps mode will be compliant with HD studio standard in I-frame only and new in acquisition, it offers full sample support with no prefilter required.
AVC-I however, is not to become a stand alone compression scheme making equipment choice another factor in choosing acquisition formats as it is with other manufactures. It is to exist alongside DVCPRO HD creating a range of equipment not only Global in application but able to give even greater choice within each piece of equipment, not uncertainty.
This is only possible because of the efficiency of the P2 system utilising a truly adaptable IT infrastructure as a basis to open the door to including new formats.

AVC-Intra in a 4:2:2 studio profile, 100Mbps provides in the luminance channel Y: 1920 * 1080i and chrominance channel C: 960 * 1080i. Respectively in the 720 format it achieves Y: 1280*720p and C: 640*720p
AVC-Intra in cost effective 50Mbps provides, in the Luminance channel Y: 1440 pix/line and in the chrominance channel C: 720 pix/line

In comparison DVCPRO HD 4:2:2 sampling provides in the Luminance channel Y: 1440 pix/line and in the chrominance channel C: 720 pix/line,
New products that will include this new compression scheme are the shoulder mounted Camcorder, the AJ-HPX2100, the new P2 mobile (AJ-HPM100).

First available products will be available in July 2007.
