iMac Emerging as Full Editing Platform - Apple/Avid embrace smaller platforms
Monday, February 8, 2010 at 01:20PM
A recent trend in desktop computer is smaller, more compact - and highly functional workstations. As 2010 begins a new decade, the editing world moves to smaller footprint and higher functionality. Both Apple and Avid now support and are encouraging the use of Apple's 27" iMac, and for obvious reasons. Quick quote now.
Prior to this change of heart, work stations by Apple and HP ruled the serious editing world. Speed and storage demanded the size of the Mac Pro and HP Z and XW workstations. Two advances recently have turned the tide: ethernet accessible shared storage and the emergence of greater CPU horse power and screen size at the iMac price point. At under $2k, you could keep a spare on the shelf too!
As of January 2010, Apple is officially encouraged their elite "Video Value Added Reseller" channel to move towards iMacs as editing clients (EAR is the only Apple V-VAR in the Southwest). On the Avid side of the world, the recent release of Media Composer v4.0.5 and Interplay v2.1 - both support Snow Leopard and Apple's iMac 27".
Will the tablet computers (ie: iPad) be next? Of course, sooner than later. All these changes point to the undeniable trend in our industry that things change fast, get less expensive and more complex! What other industry can brag about this much fun? ;)
